Pharmacokinetics. Silymarin is not soluble in water and is usually administered in capsules as a standard extract (70 to 80% silymarin). Absorption after oral administration is rather low, with recovery in the bile in rats ranging from 2 to 3%.

Silymarin is used in the treatment of Chronic liver disease and Liver cirrhosis. Silymarin is obtained from milk thistle seeds (Silybum marianum). It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect liver cells from harmful effects of toxic chemicals (called free radicals) as well as some other medicines.

Interactions

Taking milk thistle might affect this enzyme and drugs it processes, such as diazepam (Valium), warfarin (Jantoven) and others. This means milk thistle might affect the levels of these drugs in your body. Diabetes medications. Milk thistle might lower blood sugar in people who have type 2 diabetes.
