Give Ambril Drop to your child by mouth with or without food. If your child develops an upset stomach, prefer giving it with food. You may require to give this medicine to your child for a few days to weeks, depending upon the severity of the disease. For maximum benefit, do not stop the medication abruptly by yourself even if your child starts to feel better and continue the medicine until the full prescribed course. Also, do not give more than the prescribed dose for fast relief as it may cause unwanted effects and worsen your child’s condition.
Ambroxol is a mucolytic. It breaks down the acid mucopolysaccharide fibres which makes the sputum thinner and less viscous and therefore promotes mucus clearance. It also stimulates synthesis and release of surfactant by type II pneumocytes.
Bioavailability of ambroxol administered orally is approximately 70–80%. The distribution half-life of ambroxol is 1.3 hours, metabolite is dibromoanthranilic acid (activity unspecified) and Elimination of ambroxol is biphasic, with an alpha half-life of 1.3 hours and a beta half-life of 8.8 hours.
Ambril Drop does not pose serious side effects and is well-tolerated by children. In case the side effects do occur, they’re likely to subside once the body adapts to the medicine. Consult your child’s doctor if these side effects persist or bother your child. The most common side effects include-

Hypersensitivity. There are no other specific contraindications for administration of ambroxol however caution is advised in patients of gastric ulceration.

All forms of tracheobronchitis, emphysema with bronchitis pneumoconiosis, chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions, bronchiectasis, bronchitis with bronchospasm asthma. During acute exacerbations of bronchitis it should be given with the appropriate antibiotic.
Ritonavir The serum concentration of Ambroxol can be increased when it is combined with Ritonavir.
Saquinavir The metabolism of Ambroxol can be decreased when combined with Saquinavir.

Do not panic. Unless your doctor has advised a specific regime for your child, you can give the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for the next dose. Do not give the double dose and follow the prescribed dosing schedule.

Do not give Ambril Drop if your child has a dry cough.
Give the medicine with food to avoid stomach upset in your child.
Practice self-care tips:
Give plenty of fluids as it helps to loosen and expel the mucus.
Avoid giving dairy and caffeinated products, spicy and fried food to your child as all these may irritate the airways and trigger coughing.
A teaspoon of honey may also help to ease out a cough reflex.
Ask your child to gargle with warm salt water as it eases the expelling of mucus.
Ensure your child takes enough rest.
Do not give this medicine to your child for a long term without consulting your child’s doctor.
Never combine Ambril Drop with other cold and flu medicines as that may increase the chances of side effects.

Q. My child has a severe cough. Can I give him two cough medicines together?
Do not give your child more than one cough or cold medicine at a time unless advised by your child’s doctor. In case of confusion, always consult your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.
Q. Can I give my cough medicine to my child?
Never give your child the medicines that have been recommended for use by adults. Children should only be given the medicines that have been formulated for them, else it may cause unwanted side effects. Check the label of the medicine properly before giving it to your child. Follow the prescribed dose strictly.
Q. What if my child takes too much Ambril Drop?
An overdose of Ambril Drop is known to aggravate the existing minor side effects which may require symptomatic treatment. Consult your child’s doctor right away in case you find you have given an extra amount of the medicine by mistake.
Q. My child is having a cough with no mucus. Can I give Ambril Drop to him?
No, Ambril Drop is advised for the treatment of wet cough. It aims to expel the mucus from the airway tract, thereby relieving your child from throat irritation, congestion and rendering him a soothing effect. Whereas, for a dry cough, cough suppressants are a better option. So, it will be wise if you ask your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.
Q. How should Ambril Drop be stored?
Ambril Drop should be stored at room temperature, in a dry place, away from direct heat and light. Also, keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children to avoid any mishap.
