Amitop 10 Tablet is normally taken before bedtime because it can make you feel sleepy. It can be taken with or without food. The dose and how often you need to take it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your symptoms. The initial dose should be increased with great caution under close supervision. This medicine may not work straight away and it could be several weeks before you get the full effects. This medicine is not addictive, but you can experience additional side effects (withdrawal symptoms) if you stop taking it suddenly. Most of the common side effects tend to be mild. Your doctor may be able to suggest ways of preventing or reducing side effects if they bother you or do not go away. Serious side effects associated with this medicine are rare.
AMITOP 10MG TABLET works by affecting certain chemical messengers (serotonin and/or norepinephrine) in the brain which communicate between brain cells, thereby helps in regulating mood and treats depression. AMITOP 10MG TABLET prevents the transmission of pain signals, thereby provides relief from neuropathic pain.
Amitriptyline undergoes extensive hepatic presystemic elimination, and its systemic bioavailability ranges from 33% to 62% after oral administration. A highly lipophilic compound, amitriptyline is widely distributed throughout the body and extensively bound to tissue and plasma proteins.

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Amitop 10 Tablet.
Amitop 10 Tablet is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby.
AMITOP 10MG TABLET belongs to a group of medicines called tricyclic antidepressants. AMITOP 10MG TABLET is used to treat depression, neuropathic pain, chronic tension-type headache, and migraine in adults. AMITOP 10MG TABLET is also used to treat bedwetting at night in children aged 6 years and above.
DRUG-DRUG INTERACTIONS: AMITOP 10MG TABLET may have interaction with pain killers (tramadol, trazodone, hydrocodone, oxycodone, acetaminophen), an antidepressant (bupropion, duloxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline), antihistamine (diphenhydramine, cetirizine), sedatives (zolpidem), muscle relaxant (cyclobenzaprine).

If you miss a dose of Amitop 10 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

It may take 4 to 6 weeks for Amitop 10 Tablet to start working. Keep taking it as prescribed.
It may cause sleepiness. Take it at bedtime and do not drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you.

Amitop 10 Tablet may cause drowsiness and dizziness, especially in the beginning of the treatment. So, avoid driving or using machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. Also, it is not advisable to drink alcohol during treatment with this medicine as it might increase sleepiness.
Q. Can the use of Amitop 10 Tablet affect my sex life?
Yes, Amitop 10 Tablet can affect sex life in both men and women. It may cause decreased sexual desire or you may experience discomfort during intercourse. Men may experience inability to develop or maintain an erection during sexual activity and may be unable to have an orgasm. If you notice these symptoms, do not stop taking the medicine but consult your doctor.
Q. I have been taking Amitop 10 Tablet for depression since a week and recently I have been wanting to harm myself. What should I do? Is it because of the medicine?
You should immediately consult your doctor or go to the hospital. Your suicidal tendencies may have increased because of your disease or the medicine. Generally, Amitop 10 Tablet takes about 2 weeks to show its effect but may take longer. Therefore, when you start taking Amitop 10 Tablet, you may have thoughts about killing or harming yourself. This is more common in people who previously had suicidal tendencies or are young adults (less than 25 years old). However, the effect of medicine is different for every individual.
