Chlordiazepoxide works by increasing the action of GABA, a chemical messenger which suppresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain. Trifluoperazine is a typical antipsychotic. It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain that affects thoughts and mood.
It is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract with peak plasma levels being reached from 1.5 to 6.0 hours after ingestion. A high interindividual variation in bioavailability has been consistently reported. In the blood, trifluoperazine is highly bound to plasma proteins.
Pharmacokinetics. Chlordiazepoxide is a long-acting benzodiazepine drug. The half-life of Chlordiazepoxide is 5 – 30 hours but has an active benzodiazepine metabolite (desmethyldiazepam), which has a half-life of 36 – 200 hours.
