Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Tropicamide+Chlorbutol is used for eye examination. Tropicamide + Chlorbutol is a combination of two medicines: Tropicamide and Chlorbutol. Tropicamide is used to dilate or enlarge the pupil of the eye so that the doctor can examine the back of the eyeball. Chlorbutol is a preservative.

Pharmacokinets

Tropicamide is a non-selective muscarinic antagonist that binds to all subtypes of muscarinic receptors. By binding to muscarinic receptors, tropicamide relaxes the pupillary sphincter muscle and causes pupil dilation. By blocking the muscarinic receptors of the ciliary body, tropicamide also prevents accommodation.

The pharmacokinetics of chlorbutol were studied after oral administration in 4 healthy subjects on two occasions. Following the rapid attainment of peak concentrations, plasma concentrations fell by approximately 50 per cent in 24 h.
