Aripiprazole is a partial agonist at D2 receptors. It may act as an antipsychotic by: Lowering dopaminergic neurotransmission in the mesolimbic pathway. Enhancing dopaminergic activity in the mesocortical pathway.

Aripiprazole accumulation is predictable from single-dose pharmacokinetics. At steady state, the pharmacokinetics of aripiprazole are dose-proportional. Elimination of aripiprazole is mainly through hepatic metabolism involving two P450 isozymes, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4.
