Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. Chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan is a combination medicine used to treat sneezing, runny nose, and cough caused by the common cold. Chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Pharmacokinets

Chlorpheniramine has a serum half-life of approximately 20 hours in adults, and elimination from the body is primarily by metabolism to monodesmethyl and didesmethyl compounds. The half-life is increased in the presence of renal dysfunction and decreased in children.

Dextromethorphan metabolism. Dextromethorphan in extensive metabolizers is rapidly metabolized (mostly in liver) to form dextrorphan. In poor metabolizers and in persons treated with quinidine, this metabolism is mostly blocked. Subsequently, most dextrorphan is rapidly glucuronidated.
