Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Belmycetine C Eye Ointment is a combination of two medicines: Chloramphenicol and Hydrocortisone. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic which stops bacterial growth by inhibiting synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Hydrocortisone is a steroid medicine. It blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause redness, swelling and itching after an allergy or infection.

Pharmacokinets

Most of a chloramphenicol dose is metabolised by the liver to inactive products, the chief metabolite being a glucuronide conjugate; only 5 to 15% of chloramphenicol is excreted unchanged in the urine. The elimination half-life is approximately 4 hours.Oral hydrocortisone at a dose of 0.2-0.3mg/kg/day reached a mean Cmax of 32.69nmol/L with a mean AUC of 90.63h*nmol/L 1 A 0.4-0.6mg/kg/day dose reached a mean Cmax of 70.81nmol/L with a mean AUC of 199.11h*nmol/L. However, the pharmacokinetics of hydrocortisone can vary by 10 times from patient to patient.

Expert Advice

Your doctor has prescribed Belmycetine C Eye Ointment to cure your eye infection and improve your symptoms.

Use it twice a day (in the morning and the evening). If your symptoms are particularly severe, your doctor may suggest you use them up to four times a day.

Wash your hands first before applying Belmycetine C Eye Ointment. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. If it does, squeeze out two or three drops straightaway onto some tissue and rinse the tip with saltwater.

Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after putting the medication. This will prevent the medication from draining out. Try not to blink or rub your eye.

Do not wear contact lenses until your infection clears up.

Eye infections can cause your eyes to become more sensitive to sunlight than usual. Wearing sunglasses may help to prevent this.

Along with using Belmycetine C Eye Ointment, give warm compress to your eyes to get relief from itching and burning sensation.

Take care to avoid spreading the infection from one eye to the other, and to other members of your family. Washing your hands regularly (particularly after touching your eyes) and not sharing towels or pillows will help to prevent the infection from spreading.
