It acts by a unique mechanism in which it reduces the synthesis and secretion of triglycerides (a type of lipid or cholesterol in blood). It also improves insulin sensitivity of the body for better utilization of the existing insulin and hence lowers the blood sugar levels.
Saroglitazar was rapidly and well absorbed across all doses in the single-dose pharmacokinetic study, with a median time to the peak plasma concentration (t max) of less than 1 h (range 0.63–1 h) under fasting conditions across the doses studied.

Saroglitazar is indicated for the treatment of diabetic dyslipidemia and hypertriglyceridemia with type 2 diabetes mellitus not controlled by statin therapy.
