Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Epoetin alfa is recombinant human erythropoietin, which is nearly identical to the endogenous hormone erythropoietin (EPO). Erythropoietin occurs in the peritubular cells of the kidney. Anemia and hypoxia are sensed by these cells and lead to the rapid secretion of EPO, which acts on erythroid marrow.

Pharmacokinets

The general pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of epoetin alfa have already been reported in previous studies. Subcutaneously injected epoetin alfa has a slow absorption and reaches its peak concentration at 5–24 h after dosing. The volume of distribution is close to the human plasma volume at 3–7 L.
