Capnea Injection is a stimulant. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances (adenosine and phosphodiesterase) leading to stimulation of the brain and respiratory system in premature newborns. This reduces the number of episodes of interrupted breathing and helps the newborns breathe on their own.
Caffeine is rapidly and completely absorbed within an hour following ingestion. It is distributed throughout body water and readily crosses cell membranes including the brain. Its primary mechanisms for stimulatory activity appear to be the blocking of adenosine receptors and inhibition of phosphodiesterases.
Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them
Common side effects of Capnea
Delirium (acute confusional state)
Insomnia (difficulty in sleeping)
Frequent urge to urinate
Dehydration
Fever
Although there are no absolute contraindications to caffeine, there are some medical conditions in which caution is necessary, which includes-
Severe anxiety
Cardiovascular disease or symptomatic cardiac arrhythmias
Peptic ulcer disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease
Hepatic impairment
Renal impairment
Seizures (as may lower seizure threshold)
Pregnancy
Capnea Injection may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.
It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Capnea Injection.
Capnea Injection should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.

Capnea Injection is a prescription medicine used in the treatment of apnea (a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts) of prematurity. It facilitates normal breathing and reduces interrupted breathing in premature newborns.
If you use other drugs or over the counter products at the same time, the effects of Capnea Injection may change. This may increase your risk for side-effects or cause your drug not to work properly. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that you doctor can help you prevent or manage drug interactions. Capnea Injection may interact with the following drugs and products:
Adenosine
Cimetidine
Dipyridamole
Fluvoxamine
Lithium
Theophylline
Vemurafenib

It is given as an injection (drip) by your doctor or nurse.
If you are breast-feeding while your infant is treated with Capnea Injection, do not drink coffee or take any other high caffeine product as caffeine passes into breast milk.
