Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Topical benzoyl peroxide exhibits bactericidal effects against Cutibacterium acnes, a key component of acne vulgaris. Benzoyl peroxide, once absorbed by the skin, is converted to benzoic acid. Approximately 5% of the benzoic acid is systemically absorbed and excreted by the renal system.

Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 23S RNA of the 50S subunit of the ribosome. Clindamycin is bacteriostatic

Pharmacokinets

In the skin, benzoyl peroxide is metabolized to benzoic acid. Approximately 5% of the benzoic acid is systemically absorbed and excreted in the urine. After topical application to the skin, benzoyl peroxide is absorbed through the epidermis. Approximately 5% of the benzoic acid is systemically absorbed.

Clindamycin is absorbed well orally and can be given parenterally. Clindamycin diffuses well into body fluids except cerebrospinal fluid; it is concentrated in phagocytes. Most of the drug is metabolized; metabolites are excreted in bile and urine

Expert Advice

You have been prescribed Clinred B Cream for the treatment of acne.

It is recommended that you use a mild soap and lukewarm water to wash with, as very hot or cold water may worsen acne. Do not wash more than you normally do.

Apply a thin layer on the affected area. It may cause minor burning, stinging, or irritation when applied. Inform your doctor if this does not go away.

Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth. Rinse it off with water if you accidentally get the cream in these areas.

During your treatment, your doctor may ask you to use another (non-antibiotic) skin preparation from time to time. It is important that you follow your doctor's advice, as this is to help prevent your acne from becoming resistant to treatment.

You may have to use it for a long time before your acne starts to improve. Be patient and keep using it every day. If, however, your skin has not improved even after completing the prescribed time, consult your doctor.
