Take this medicine in the dose and duration advised by your doctor as its long-term use may be habit-forming. Do not skip any doses, but if you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. Finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medication without talking to the doctor may cause rebound seizures.

Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Phenobarbital increases the amount of time chloride channels are open, consequently depressing the central nervous system. This action occurs by acting on GABA-A receptor subunits

Phenytoin is a hydantoin derivative, a first-generation anti-convulsant drug that is effective in the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, complex partial seizures, and status epilepticus without significantly impairing neurological function

Pharmacokinets

After administration of phenobarbitai tablets, the maximum phenobarbitai serum concentration was 5.5 mg/liter at 2.3 hours after the dose. Adjusted absolute availability of phenobarbital from the tablets studied was 94.9 per cent (range 81-111.9 per cent). The elimination half-life averaged 5.1 days for the oral dose

Phenytoin follows nonlinear (or zero-order) kinetics at therapeutic concentrations, because the rate of metabolism is close to the maximum capacity of the enzymes involved. In nonlinear kinetics, clearance and half-life fluctuate with plasma concentration
