Inhaled salmeterol belongs to a group of drugs called beta-2 agonists. These drugs stimulate beta-2 receptors present in the bronchial musculature. This causes them to relax and prevent the onset and worsening of symptoms of asthma.
Fluticasone propionate works through an unknown mechanism to affect the action of various cell types and mediators of inflammation 10. Fluticasone propionate activates glucocorticoid receptors and inhibits lung eosinophilia in rats
Salmeterol is an inhaled long-acting selective beta(2)-adrenoceptor agonist that is commercially available as the xinafoate (1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid) salt of the racemic mixture of the two optical isomers, (R)- and (S)-, of salmeterol. It acts locally in the lung through action on beta2 receptors.
For inhaled fluticasone propionate (FP), oral bioavailability is negligible due both to low absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and high hepatic first-pass metabolism. Therefore, any systemic effects of this drug arise from lung absorption
