Combutol 200 Tablet is usually given in combination with at least one other tuberculosis medicine. It should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. This medicine may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time every day. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early can result in treatment failure and in the development of drug-resistant tuberculosis. This can lead to serious health complications.

Mechanism Of Action

The mechanism of action of ethambutol is not completely known. There is evidence that the drug exerts its bacteriostatic activity by virtue of inhibition of arabinosyl transferase, an enzyme that polymerizes arabinose into arabinan and then arabinogalactan, a mycobacterial cell wall constituent

Pharmacokinets

Ethambutol is mainly oxidized by an aldehyde dehydrogenase to an aldehyde metabolite, followed by conversion to the dicarboxylic acid 2,2'-(ethylinediimino)di-butyric acid. Ethambutol is 50% eliminated in the urine as the unmetabolized parent compound and 8-15% as inactive metabolites

Indications

Ethambutol is indicated in combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. It has a long duration of action as it is administered daily, and a moderate therapeutic window. Patients should be counselled regarding the risk of optic neuritis and hepatic toxicity.


Interactions

Avoid taking an antacid containing aluminum hydroxide (Alternagel, Maalox, Mi-Acid, Mylanta, Rulox) within 4 hours after you take ethambutol. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb ethambutol

Do not chew, crush or break it. Combutol 200 Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Effects Of Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Combutol 200 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
