Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Human insulin is in a class of medications called hormones. Human insulin is used to take the place of insulin that is normally produced by the body. It works by helping move sugar from the blood into other body tissues where it is used for energy. It also stops the liver from producing more sugar

Insulin isophane works by helping blood sugar (glucose) get into cells so your body can use it for energy. Insulin isophane is often used in combination with a shorter-acting insulin. It may also be used alone or with other oral diabetes drugs

Pharmacokinets

The pharmacokinetics of insulin comprise the absorption process, the distribution including binding to circulating insulin antibodies, if present, and to insulin receptors, and its ultimate degradation and excretion. The distribution and metabolism of absorbed insulin follow that of endogenous insulin

Insulin is a hormone that works by lowering levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin isophane is an intermediate-acting insulin that starts to work within 2 to 4 hours after injection, peaks in 4 to 12 hours, and keeps working for 12 to 18 hours

Injection below the skin of the abdomen results in faster absorption than other injection sites such as skin of the upper arms, thighs, or buttocks. After injection, the site of injection should not be massaged.

Injection sites must be rotated to prevent hard lumps from developing at one site.

Change to another type or brand of insulin should be done under strict medical supervision as it may require a change in dosage.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) may occur when taken along with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or on delaying/skipping a meal. Carry a sugar source with you for immediate relief.

Do not share your insulin device with other people, even if the needle has been changed. You may give other people a serious infection or get a serious infection from them.
