CPZ 50 Tablet is also used for controlling intractable hiccups, feeling or being sick (nausea), and autism (learning and communication difficulties). This medicine belongs to a group of drugs known as phenothiazines, which act on the central nervous system. It alters the thoughts and elevates the mood, improving the person’s ability to think, feel and behave.

The antiemetic effect of chlorpromazine stems from the combined blockade of histamine H1, dopamine D2, and muscarinic M1 receptors in the vomiting center

Pharmacokinets

Pharmacokinetics. The pharmacokinetics of chlorpromazine is also not fully understood and varies per the individual and route of administration. However, the kidneys excrete approximately 43-65% of the daily dose within 24 hours. There are 5 clinically important metabolites, 4 of which are biologically active.

CPZ 50 Tablet is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby.

If the CPZ 50 Tablet is given, monitor the baby for excessive sleepiness during breastfeeding.


Indications

Schizophrenia (primarily the positive symptoms)

Bipolar I acute manic type of manic-depressive illness.

Acute agitation marked by explosive hyperexcitable behavior out of proportion to the initial provocation.

To control nausea and vomiting, including intraoperative nausea and vomiting.
