Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Poractant alfa reduces the surface tension at the air-liquid interface on alveolar surfaces during ventilation and stabilizes the alveoli against collapse at resting transpulmonary pressures. This leads to an improvement in lung compliance and respiratory gas exchange.

Pharmacokinets

Poractant alfa lowers minimum surface tension to less than or equal to 4 mN/m. This compensates for the lack of endogenous surfactant and restores adequate surface activity to the lungs. Poractant alfa is administered directly to the site of action in the lungs via endotracheal tube

Side Effects

Pneumothorax

Brain hemorrhage

Chronic lung disease

Hypoxia (decreased oxygen level in blood)

Infection

Contra Indications

However, poractant alfa should be used with caution in patients with a history of porcine protein hypersensitivity. During surfactant administration, transient episodes of bradycardia, hypotension, endotracheal tube blockage, and decreased oxygen saturation have been reported.
