Compared to the oral anticoagulants, such as warfarin, dalteparin has a rapid onset of action. Its mechanism of action is to increase the activity of antithrombin III (AT-III), a plasma protein that inhibits factor IIa (thrombin), factor Xa, and several other clotting factors.
Dalteparin is used as a prophylaxis for deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms in patients undergoing general surgery (e.g., abdominal, gynecologic, urologic), and in patients with acute medical conditions
