Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

The mode of action of furazolidone in bacteria and susceptible protozoa (including Giardia and trichomonads) has not been definitively determined but appears to include inhibition of oxidative reactions, including the decarboxylation of pyruvate to acetyl coenzyme A, thereby reducing the available energy for vital

Pharmacokinets

Furazolidone is rapidly and extensively metabolized; the primary metabolic pathway identified begins with nitro-reduction to the aminofuran derivative. Two major metabolites are produced: 3-amino-2-oxazolidone (AOZ) or beta-hydroxyethylhydrazine (HEH). AOZ is responsible for monoamine oxidase inhibition

The majority of metronidazole and its metabolites are excreted in urine and faeces, with less than 12% excreted unchanged in urine. The pharmacokinetics of metronidazole are unaffected by acute or chronic renal failure, haemodialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, age, pregnancy or enteric disease
