Depakote XR 500 Tablet may be used alone or in combination with other medicines. The dose and how often you need to take it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your symptoms. You can take this medicine with or without food but take it at the same time each day to get the most benefit.
Divalproex dissociates from the valproic acid ion in the intestinal tract. Its mechanism of action likely includes increasing brain GABA concentrations, and Na+ channel inhibition. Valproic acid is effective in treating myoclonic, tonic–clonic, focal seizures, and secondary generalized seizures
Divalproex sodium dissociates to the valproate ion in the gastrointestinal tract. The mechanisms by which valproate exerts its therapeutic effects have not been established. It has been suggested that its activity in epilepsy is related to increased brain concentrations of gamma-aminobutyric acid

Depakote (divalproex sodium) is a valproate and is indicated for the treatment of the manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood
Some products that may interact with this drug include: certain antidepressants (such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline, phenelzine), certain antibiotics (carbapenems such as imipenem), irinotecan, mefloquine, orlistat, other medications for seizure (such as ethosuximide, lamotrigine, phenytoin, rufinamide, topiramate)
Do not chew, crush or break it. Depakote XR 500 Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

If you miss a dose of Depakote XR 500 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
