Basic Information

Mechanism Of Action

Nifedipine is in a class of medications called calcium-channel blockers. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard. It controls chest pain by increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.

Pharmacokinets

Because of presystemic metabolism, the bioavailability is about 56% to 77%. After oral administration of 10 mg, the mean plasma concentration of nifedipine reaches maximum values of 160 +/- 49 micrograms/liter after 30 to 60 minutes. After 8 hours, the mean concentration drops to 3.4 +/- 1.2 micrograms/liter.
