Deferasirox works in treating iron toxicity by binding trivalent (ferric) iron (for which it has a strong affinity), forming a stable complex which is eliminated via the kidneys. The absolute bioavailability (AUC) of deferasirox tablets for oral suspension is 70% compared to an intravenous dose
At the end of the 45-minute IV infusion, deferasirox plasma concentra- tions reached a maximum (Cmax) of 16.4 ± 2.4 µmol/L (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation) and declined rapidly thereafter with a mean elimination half-life (t1/2) of 4.49 ± 0.70 hours.
