Sodium valproate (VPA) was first marketed in the United States in 1978. In this pilot study of pharmacokinetics and toxicity, VPA was added to the treatment regimens of 20 patients (10 adults and 10 children) with intractable seizures. The drug was absorbed and excreted rapidly; the mean half-life was 9.6 hours.Valproic acid is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, peak concentrations being attained 1 to 2 hours after administration of the conventional tablet, but later with the enteric-coated tablets. The bioavailability of valproic acid is complete and independent of the preparation used.
Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them
