Dirifa 550 Tablet is also used to treat infectious diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adults and children. This medicine can be used alone or in combination with other medicines. It may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time, each day. It should be used in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Take it at the same time each day to get the most benefit and you should keep on taking this medicine for as long as you are prescribed. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat.

Mechanism Of Action

Rifaximin is a poorly absorbed bactericidal rifamycin derivative, which inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by irreversibly binding to RpoB, the beta-subunit of the bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

Pharmacokinets

Mean rifaximin pharmacokinetic parameters were Cmax 4.3 ± 2.8 ng/mL and AUCt 19.5 ± 16.5 ng•h/mL with a median Tmax of 1.25 hours. Systemic absorption of rifaximin (200 mg three times daily) was also evaluated in 13 subjects with shigellosis on Days 1 and 3 of a three-day course of treatment.

Contra Indications

XIFAXAN is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to rifaximin, any of the rifamycin antimicrobial agents, or any of the components in XIFAXAN. Hypersensitivity reactions have included exfoliative dermatitis, angioneurotic edema, and anaphylaxis [see ADVERSE REACTIONS] .

Dirifa 550 Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.

Breast Feeding Related Information

Dirifa 550 Tablet is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.

Effects Of Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Dirifa 550 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Dirifa 550 Tablet reduces the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) recurrence in patients with liver disease.

It may cause reddish discoloration of urine. This is normal and harmless.

Finish the full course of the medication, even if you feel better.
