Furadantin 50mg Tablet should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. You may take it with food to avoid nausea, which is a common side effect. It is better to have this medicine at the same time each day to get the most benefit and you should keep on taking this medicine for as long as you are prescribed it, even if your symptoms quickly improve. If you stop taking it too early the infection may return or worsen.
Some people may develop side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually temporary and go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if these side effects bother you or do not go away. This medicine may turn your urine into dark yellow or brown color. But, this is normal and nothing to worry about.
Before starting treatment with this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering from any liver, kidney or heart problems or if you are allergic to any antibiotic.
Nitrofurantoin is activated inside bacteria by reduction via the flavoprotein nitrofurantoin reductase to unstable metabolites, which disrupt ribosomal RNA, DNA and other intracellular components. It is bactericidal, especially to bacteria present in acid urine.
Nitrofurantoin attains bactericidal effects in the lower urinary tract. Based on pharmacokinetic data, approximately 20% to 25% of nitrofurantoin is retrieved from the urine in unchanged form over 24 hours. Nitrofurantoin is soluble in urine, imparting a brown color to urine.
Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Furadantin 50mg Tablet is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
Consuming alcohol while taking Furadantin 50mg Tablet may cause symptoms such as flushing, increased heart beat, nausea, thirst, chest pain and low blood pressure (Disulfiram reaction).
Furadantin 50mg Tablet should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.
Nitrofurantoin is specifically indicated for the treatment of infections when due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, staphylococci, Citrobacter, Klebsiella and Enterobacter. Acute Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): 50 mg four times daily for seven days.
Nitrofurantoin doesn't have many interactions. But it may interact with a few other medications, including magnesium-containing antacids, probenecid, and methotrexate. It's important to let your healthcare provider know if you're taking nitrofurantoin and plan to travel internationally.

If you miss a dose of Furadantin 50mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

You should take Furadantin 50mg Tablet with your meal or straightaway after the meal. Taking with food helps in absorption of medicine so that it works better. If you take it without food, you are likely to get an upset stomach. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and loss of appetite may also occur. Therefore, to avoid unpleasant side effects, take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Q. Does Furadantin 50mg Tablet make your urine orange?
Furadantin 50mg Tablet may turn your urine brown or dark yellow in colour. However, you need not worry as this is usually temporary and completely harmless effect. It will disappear once you stop taking Furadantin 50mg Tablet. Consult your doctor if you are not sure or still have any concern, but do not stop taking Furadantin 50mg Tablet.
Q. Can Furadantin 50mg Tablet give you a yeast infection?
Yes, some people may get a fungal or yeast infection known as ‘thrush’ after taking Furadantin 50mg Tablet. This is because antibiotics kill the ‘good bacteria’ which help in preventing thrush. You should inform your doctor if you get vaginal itching or discharge after taking Furadantin 50mg Tablet or soon after stopping it.
