HALOP 1.5MG TABLET is also used to treat Huntington’s disease (degeneration of nerve cells in the brain) and Tourette’s syndrome (disease involving unwanted sounds or repetitive movements).


Your doctor might want you to take several diagnostic tests before or during your treatment with HALOP 1.5MG TABLET such as ECG (electrocardiogram) or checking the levels of electrolytes such as magnesium or potassium in your blood.


HALOP 1.5MG TABLET is not recommended in patients having heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, or low potassium levels. Before taking HALOP 1.5MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, liver problems, thyroid problems, blood disorders, depression, bleeding in the brain, prolactin-dependent tumors, or epilepsy.


HALOP 1.5MG TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant women only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the baby and is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Avoid consumption of alcohol during treatment with HALOP 1.5MG TABLET, as it may have additive side effects and lower the blood pressure.


HALOP 1.5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children under 3 years of age and should be used with caution in elderly patients. The most common side effects of taking HALOP 1.5MG TABLET are feeling agitated, difficulty sleeping, headache, dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting or constipation. Contact your doctor if any of the above symptoms worsen or doesn’t improve.

Mechanism Of Action

HALOP 1.5MG TABLET contains Haloperidol which is an antipsychotic that works by blocking certain receptors in the brain called dopamine (D2) receptors. This decreases the levels of dopamine, a nerve chemical. Thus, rebalancing dopamine to improve thinking, mood, and behaviour.

Pharmacokinets

The blood plasma haloperidol level reaches peak concentration at around six days post-administration and the half-life is approximately six weeks. When administered intravenously, haloperidol has a bioavailability of 100%. The onset of action occurs within seconds and lasts for around four to six hours.

Side Effects

Agitation

Difficulty sleeping or sleepiness

Depression

Abnormal muscle tension

Decreased white blood cells and platelets (fever, bleeding easily)

Confusion

Decreased or loss of libido

Fits (seizures)

Stiff muscles and joints

Muscle spasms, twitching, or contractions

Neck spasm causing the neck to twist on one side

Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight

Pregnancy Related Information

HALOP 1.5MG TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant women only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the unborn baby. If HALOP 1.5MG TABLET is taken during third trimester it may cause muscle tremors, stiff or weak muscles, being sleepy or agitated, or problems in breathing or feeding in newborn babies. Consult your doctor before taking HALOP 1.5MG TABLET.


Product And Alcohol Interaction

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking HALOP 1.5MG TABLET as it may make you sleepy, less alert and lower down the blood pressure.


Breast Feeding Related Information

HALOP 1.5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Indications

Haloperidol is indicated for the treatment of the manifestations of several psychotic disorders including schizophrenia, acute psychosis, Tourette syndrome, and other severe behavioural states.

Interactions

Quinidine, buspirone and fluoxetine increase the plasma haloperidol level while carbamazepine, phenobarbital and rifampicin decrease the plasma haloperidol level. The combined use of lithium and haloperidol has been shown to cause encephalopathy, extrapyramidal symptoms, coma and other neurological problems.
