Levofloxacin is a bactericidal antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone drug class that directly inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis. Levofloxacin promotes the breakage of DNA strands by inhibiting DNA-gyrase in susceptible organisms, which inhibits the relaxation of supercoiled DNA.

Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and is the optical S-(-) isomer of the racemic drug substance ofloxacin. It has a broad spectrum of in vitro activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain other pathogens such as Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Legionella and Mycobacteria spp.
