This medication blocks the effect of progesterone by competitively binding to the specific receptors and sensitizing the inner linings of the uterus inducing bleeding and contractions. It also blocks the effect of cortisol at the specific receptors and reducing the effect caused by an excess of this hormone.
The serum transport protein alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) regulates the serum kinetics of mifepristone. Binding to AAG limits the tissue availability of mifepristone, explaining the low metabolic clearance rate of 0.55 L/kg/day and the low volume of distribution of mifepristone.

Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid. It is a medication most commonly used for medically induced abortions. Mifepristone can also be used in the management and treatment of Cushing's syndrome and uterine leiomyomas. At low doses, mifepristone blocks progesterone by competitively binding its intracellular receptor.
Drug-Drug Interactions: MIFEPRISTONE interacts with corticosteroids (dexamethasone), antifungal (ketoconazole, itraconazole), antibiotics (erythromycin, rifampicin), anti-epileptic (phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine, tacrolimus, sirolimus), medicines to treat migraine (ergotamine). So, MIFEPRISTONE should not be taken along with these drugs.
Drug-Food Interactions: Please tell your doctor about all the Vitamins, herbs, and supplements you are taking as the MIFEPRISTONE may interact with them to produce unpleasant side effects. Also, MIFEPRISTONE is known to interact with St John’s Wort (a natural remedy used to treat mild depression) and grapefruit juice.
Drug-Disease Interactions: MIFEPRISTONE should be taken with caution in people with a bleeding problem, confirmed or suspected ectopic pregnancy, heart problem, liver or kidney disease, or vaginal bleeding.
