Methastar 0.125mg Tablet can be taken with or without food, but take it at the same time to get the most benefit. It should be taken as your doctor's advice. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you.
The most common side effects of this medicine include headache, increase in blood pressure and seizure. If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. Generally, alcohol should be avoided while taking this medicine.
Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have ever had heart disease or you have high blood pressure. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works.
Methastar 0.125mg Tablet is an ergot alkaloid. It works by causing sustained contractions of the smooth muscles of the uterus. This results in compression of the blood vessels which controls bleeding after delivery.
Pharmacokinetic studies following an I.V. injection have shown that methylergonovine is rapidly distributed from plasma to peripheral tissues within 2-3 minutes or less. The bioavailability after oral administration was reported to be about 60% with no accumulation after repeated doses.
Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Contraindications. Methylergometrine is contraindicated in patients with hypertension and pre-eclampsia.
Methastar 0.125mg Tablet is highly unsafe to use during pregnancy. Seek your doctor's advice as studies on pregnant women and animals have shown significant harmful effects to the developing baby.
It is not known whether it is safe to consume alcohol with Methastar 0.125mg Tablet. Please consult your doctor.
Methastar 0.125mg Tablet should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.
Methylergometrine is an ergot alkaloid. It increases the tone, rate and amplitude of uterine contractions which shortens the third stage of labour and reduces blood loss. Synonym: methylergonovine. Onset: 5-10 minutes (oral); 2-5 minutes (IM).
Drug-Drug Interaction: METHYLERGOMETRINE may interact with anaesthetics (sevoflurane, halothane, cyclopropane, desflurane), other medicines used to start labour (prostaglandins), anti-diuretic hormone (vasopressin), a neurotransmitter (dopamine), anti-sickness medicine (ondansetron), sympathomimetic agents (epinephrine).
Drug-Food Interaction: Grapefruit juice intake should be avoided with METHYLERGOMETRINE as it may interact with METHYLERGOMETRINE to produce unpleasant side effects.
Drug-Disease Interaction: METHYLERGOMETRINE should not be given to patients with previous cesarean section, hypertension (high blood pressure), heart problem, cervical cancer, herpes infection, kidney problem, if you are more than 40 weeks pregnant or are more than 35 years age, the pelvis is too small for normal delivery.
