Metropen 400mg Tablet helps prevent an infection after surgery. It is also used in the treatment of dental infections, leg ulcers, and pressure sores. This medicine is best taken after eating some food. It should be taken at the same time each day to get the most benefit. The amount you are advised will depend on what you are being treated for and how bad it is, but you should take this antibiotic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better after a short time but do not stop taking it until you have finished a full course of treatment, even if you feel well. If you stop taking it early, some bacteria may survive, and the infection may come back. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine and for a few days after stopping it. Otherwise, you may get unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
The most common side effects of this medicine are headache, dryness in the mouth, nausea, and a slight metallic taste in the mouth. Metronidazole and metabolites are 60 to 80% eliminated in the urine, and 6-15% excreted in the feces. The elimination half-life of metronidazole is 7.3 ± 1.0 after a single 500mg IV dose in healthy subjects. Another resource indicates that the elimination half-life for metronidazole ranges from 6 to 10 hours.

Drug-Drug Interactions: METRONIDAZOLE have interactions with medicines used to treat HIV (amprenavir), anti-coagulant medications (anisindione, dicumarol, warfarin), certain vaccinations (BCG, cholera vaccine live, typhoid vaccine live), anti-cancer medication (busulfan) and medicines containing ethanol.
Drug-Food Interactions: You are recommended not to consume alcohol while on treatment with METRONIDAZOLE and for 48 hours after completing the course to avoid unpleasant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, palpitations, headache, and hot flushes.
Drug-Disease Interactions: Inform your doctor if you have Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea, bone marrow depression/low blood count, CNS disorder, epilepsy, porphyria (blood disorder), peripheral neuropathy, heart, kidney or liver problems.
