The principal action of pralidoxime is to reactivate cholinesterase (mainly outside of the central nervous system) which has been inactivated by phosphorylation due to an organophosphate pesticide or related compound.
Pralidoxime is one oxime commonly used as acetylcholinesterase reactivating agent. Its effect results from a molecular nucleophilic reaction with the organophosphate, removing it from the acetylcholinesterase site, thereby restoring the capacity of acetylcholinesterase to hydrolyse acetylcholine.
