This medicine will block the chemical serotonin from releasing in your gut and your central nervous system. This will prevent vomiting and nausea. Nitron Syrup is available in four different forms that can be taken orally; tablet, disintegrating (dissolving) tablet, solution and film. It also comes in an IV (intravenous) form that can be injected to your body by a doctor. You can take it with food or without food.
Your doctor must be informed if you are allergic to Nitron Syrup as well as other medications that block serotonin, along with any other allergies that you have. He/ She must also know about your medical history and if you had problems such as liver disease, irregular heartbeat and stomach or intestinal problems in the past. Apart from that, you must also inform the doctor if you are under any medication for depression or any psychiatric disorder.
The dosage of Nitron Syrup is decided after taking your medical condition into account and how responsive your body is to therapy. In case of children, the dose also depends on their weight and age. If you are undergoing chemotherapy, you need to take Nitron Syrup orally half an hour before your treatment starts. In case of radiation, take it 1-2 hours before the procedure of treatment begins. For preventing nausea before a surgery, it is advised to take the medication an hour before your surgery. In case you miss a dose, you can take the medication once you remember it. If it is already time for the next dose, ensure that you do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose. Overdose of Nitron Syrup can lead to severe constipation, faint spells or feeling light-headed.
Nitron Syrup works by blocking 5-HT3 receptors peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Ondansetron undergoes rapid absorption from the GI tract, and the peak plasma concentration (Tmax) is approximately 1.5 hours after an 8 mg single oral dose. The absolute bioavailability of ondansetron after oral administration is approximately 60%(50%-70%).
