NIVAQUINE PDS contains Chloroquine which belongs to a group of medicines called antimalarials and amebicides. It treats uncomplicated malaria caused by susceptible strains of P. falciparum, P.malariae, P. ovale and P.vivax, prophylaxis of malaria and extraintestinal amebiasis. Chloroquine phosphate is an antimalarial and amebicidal medicine. It does not prevent relapses in patients with vivax or ovale malaria because it is not effective against exoerythrocytic forms of the parasites.
Before taking NIVAQUINE PDS inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose depends on your child’s age and body weight. The common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, headache, rash, itching and hair loss.
The drug chloroquine is bactericidal for Bacillus megaterium; it inhibits DNA and RNA biosynthesis and produces rapid degradation of ribosomes and dissimilation of ribosomal RNA. Inhibition of protein synthesis is also observed, evidently as a secondary effect.
Chloroquine is predominantly eliminated in the urine. 50% of a dose is recovered in the urine as unchanged chloroquine, with 10% of the dose recovered in the urine as desethylchloroquine. The half life of chloroquine is 20-60 days. Chloroquine has a total plasma clearance of 0.35-1L/h/kg.

Chloroquine should not be used in patients with retinal or vision changes unless treating acute malaria. Chloroquine is also contraindicated in patients who suffer from a known hydroxychloroquine sensitivity.
NIVAQUINE PDS should be used with caution in pregnant women only if clearly needed. Consult your doctor for advice.
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with NIVAQUINE PDS.

Malaria (Vivax malaria)

Some products that may interact with this drug are: mefloquine, penicillamine, remdesivir. Many drugs besides chloroquine may affect the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Some examples are amiodarone, azithromycin, disopyramide, dronedarone, pimozide, quinidine, among others.
Do not chew, crush or break it. Nivaquine Pds Tablet is to be taken with food.
Store below 30°C
If you miss a dose of Nivaquine Pds Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Consult a doctor before taking any medicines.
Nivaquine Pds Tablet is used for the prevention and treatment of malaria.
Take it with food to decrease the risk of stomach upset.
Tips to reduce the chance of being bitten by mosquitoes:
Wear light-colored and covered clothing when you are outside after sunset.
Use insect repellent creams or sprays on parts of your body not covered by clothing.
Spray to kill any mosquitoes that may have entered rooms despite screening.
It may cause a blurring of vision when you first start taking it. Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration.
Eye examination before and at 3–6 monthly intervals during use is required if patients are receiving Nivaquine Pds Tablet at continuous high doses for a longer duration.
It may cause low blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly, if you are diabetic.
When used long-term, your doctor may monitor the amounts of the different types of blood cells in your blood regularly. Inform your doctor if you have unexplained bruising or bleeding, sore throat, fever, or a general feeling of tiredness.
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Nivaquine Pds Tablet is to be taken with food.
Can I stop taking NIVAQUINE PDS when my symptoms are relieved?
No, do not stop taking and complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
Can the use of NIVAQUINE PDS cause diarrhea?
Yes. It may cause diarrhea, if you are experiencing severe diarrhea, consult your doctor for advice.
Is NIVAQUINE PDS effective?
Yes, it is effective if used in the prescribed dose and frequency as instructed by your physician.
