Opel Spas Tablet is best taken one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. The dose will depend on your underlying condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep on taking it as prescribed even if your symptoms disappear quickly. You can increase the efficiency of the treatment by eating smaller meals more often and avoiding caffeinated drinks (like tea and coffee), and spicy or fatty foods.


The most common side effects observed with this medicine include nausea, vomiting, headache, flatulence, diarrhea, and stomach pain. These symptoms are generally mild but if they bother you or do not go away, consult your doctor. Long-term use of this medicine may lead to an increased risk of side effects. For instance, using this medicine for more than 1 year may increase your risk for bone fractures, especially with higher doses. Talk to your doctor about ways to prevent bone loss (osteoporosis).


Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have or had severe liver problems, allergic reactions to similar medicines, or bone loss (osteoporosis). Other medicines may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. Let your doctor know about all other medicines you are taking, to make sure it is safe. Opel Spas Tablet is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach which provide relief from symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Pharmacokinets

In contrast to the long duration of antisecretory action, omeprazole is rapidly eliminated from plasma. The half-life is less than 1 hour, and omeprazole is almost entirely cleared from plasma within 3-4 hours. Omeprazole is completely metabolized in the liver.

Contra Indications

Interactions

Drug-Drug Interactions: OMEPRAZOLE may interact with a blood thinner (clopidogrel, warfarin), antifungal (ketoconazole, voriconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole), anti-HIV drug (atazanavir, nelfinavir), iron supplements, antibiotic (ampicillin, rifampicin), heart medicine (digoxin) and anti-cancer drug (methotrexate). Let your doctor know if you are taking these medicines.

Drug-Food Interactions: OMEPRAZOLE interact with St John's wort plant that is used as an anti-depressant. This plant may affect the working of OMEPRAZOLE. So avoid its intake with OMEPRAZOLE.

Drug-Disease Interactions: OMEPRAZOLE should be not given in patients with C. difficile induced colitis, liver disease, bone fractures, low Vitamin B12 (anaemia), low magnesium (hypomagnesemia).

This medicine can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing the gut motility and Opel Spas Tablet decreases the acid production in the stomach. So, this combination is very effective in the treatment of reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.

You should not take it if you are taking a medicine containing atazanavir and nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Let your doctor know if you are suffering from any liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain or indigestion. Tell your doctor about all the other medicines you are taking because they may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. Inform your doctor if you have or ever had an allergic skin reaction with this medicine. It should not be given to children who are less than 1 year of age or whose body weight is less than 10 kgs.
