Pepsigard-O Suspension Sugar Free is taken without food in a dose and duration as advised by the doctor. The dose you are given will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen. Let your healthcare team know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine. Do not take it for more than the recommended duration as long-term administration may have harmful effects on the health.


The most common side effects are constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, and allergic reaction. These are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any side effects. To overcome constipation, you should add fiber-rich foods in your diet and stay hydrated. It may also cause dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it can worsen your sleepiness. Lifestyle modifications like having cold milk and avoiding hot tea, coffee, spicy food or chocolate can help you to get better results.

Mechanism Of Action

Pepsigard-O Suspension Sugar Free is a combination of two medicines: Sucralfate and Oxetacaine / Oxethazaine. Sucralfate is a medication to treat ulcers. It covers the damaged ulcer tissue in the stomach and protects it from acid or injury to facilitate healing. Oxetacaine / Oxethazaine is a local anesthetic whose numbing effect provides fast relief from pain caused due to ulcers or acidic injury in the stomach.

Pharmacokinets

A peak plasma concentration of oxetacaine of approximately 20 ng/ml is attained about one hour after oral administration. LEss than 1/3 of the administered dose is absorbed as it undergoes extensive metabolism. Metabolism: Oxetacaine is rapidly and extensively metabolized hepatically.

Contra Indications

You should avoid taking OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE if you are allergic to OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE or other ingredients present in it. Inform your doctor before taking OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE if you have a history of appendicitis, blockage of the bowel, rectal bleeding, kidney problems, low-magnesium diet, or if you have undergone recent bowel surgery. Caution is required before giving OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE to elderly patients. Sucralfate in OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE contains aluminium, which is normally removed by your kidney. Therefore, older adults and people who have kidney problems may be at greater risk for developing high aluminium levels while using this drug with other products that contain aluminium (e.g. antacids). Do not take OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless prescribed by the doctor. The safety and effectiveness in children are not established, please consult your doctor before giving them OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE. Avoid consuming alcohol along with OXETACAINE+SUCRALFATE as it could lead to increased acidity.

Interactions

Drug-Drug Interaction: SUCRALFATE+OXETACAINE interact with the antacid drug (aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide), anti-HIV drug (dolutegravir), vitamin D analogs (doxercalciferol, paricalcitol), antibiotic (ciprofloxacin, gemifloxacin, levofloxacin), antidiabetic (acarbose, metformin, glipizide, glimepiride, glyburide), blood thinner (warfarin).

Drug-Food Interaction: Drinking alcohol and nicotine (tobacco) with SUCRALFATE+OXETACAINE may cause dehydration and elevate the level of stomach acid thereby decreasing SUCRALFATE+OXETACAINE efficacy.

Drug-Disease Interaction: Before taking SUCRALFATE+OXETACAINE it is better to inform your doctor if you have any kidney or liver disease as a dose of SUCRALFATE+OXETACAINE needs to be adjusted.
