Thiopental 500 mg Injection is an anesthetic used for inducing and maintaining unconsciousness or sleep during surgical procedures. It is also used to reduce intracranial pressure in neurosurgical patients and as an adjunct for the control of fits during or following inhalation anesthesia or local anesthetics. It should only be administered by a trained healthcare professional.
This medicine works by altering the action of certain natural substances, which in turn induces unconsciousness and sedation.
In anaesthesiology the pharmacokinetics of thiopental are described as linear; when doses and duration of treatment increase, nonlinear pharmacokinetics occur because of the saturation and/or the induction of the metabolism.
Major & minor side effects for Thiopental 500 mg Injection

Thiopental should be used with caution in cases of liver disease, Addison's disease, myxedema, severe heart disease, severe hypotension, a severe breathing disorder, or a family history of porphyria. Co-administration of pentoxifylline and thiopental causes death by acute pulmonary edema in rats.

(Thiopental Sodium for Injection, USP) is indicated (1) as the sole anesthetic agent for brief (15 minute) procedures, (2) for induction of anesthesia prior to administration of other anesthetic agents, (3) to supplement regional anesthesia, (4) to provide hypnosis during balanced anesthesia with other agents .
The risk or severity of CNS depression can be increased when Thiopental is combined with Acetazolamide. The risk or severity of adverse effects can be increased when Acetophenazine is combined with Thiopental. The metabolism of Thiopental can be increased when combined with Acetylsalicylic acid.
