This medicine works by increasing the amount of a chemical substance in the brain which helps in maintaining the mental balance.
Imipramine has a mean half life of 12 h. Its active metabolite, desipramine has a mean half life of 22.5 h 3. Imipramine has a mean clearance of 1 L/h/kg. Its active metabolite, desipramine has a mean clearance of 1.8 L/h/kg 3.

Imipramine is contraindicated in patients who have shown prior hypersensitivity to it and in acute porphyria, hepatic impairment and cardiovascular disease.
This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. The risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.

Imipramine may be used to treat depression and nocturnal enuresis in children Label. Unlabeled indications include chronic and neuropathic pain (including diabetic neuropathy), panic disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 12,11,1,13,14,15,2.
Drug-Drug Interactions: IMIPRAMINE may interact with anti-depressants (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, duloxetine, escitalopram, sertraline), antipsychotics (aripiprazole, quetiapine), anti-convulsant (carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, pregabalin, topiramate), benzodiazepine (diazepam, nitrazepam, oxazepam, alprazolam, clonazepam), pain killer (aspirin, tramadol, codeine, dihydrocodeine), anti-HIV (ritonavir), antacid (cimetidine, esomeprazole), blood thinner (warfarin), skeletal muscle relaxant (cyclobenzaprine), anti-anxiety (alprazolam) and hormone (levothyroxine).
Drug-Food Interactions: Do not take St. John’s wort (herbal supplement to treat depression) along with IMIPRAMINE.
Drug-Disease Interactions: Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, low blood pressure, overactive thyroid, urination problems or enlarged prostate, glaucoma, diabetes, schizophrenia, mania, pheochromocytoma (tumour of the adrenal gland), heart, kidney or liver problems.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose then the missed dose should be skipped.

Consumption of alcohol during treatment with this medicine may increase the risk of severe side effects. These side effects may include confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and fainting. It is advised that you should avoid alcohol and not to perform activities which require high mental alertness like driving a vehicle and operating machinery when taking these medicines together.
