Mechanism Of Action

Nitrofurantoin is activated inside bacteria by reduction via the flavoprotein nitrofurantoin reductase to unstable metabolites, which disrupt ribosomal RNA, DNA and other intracellular components. It is bactericidal, especially to bacteria present in acid urine.


Pharmacokinets

Nitrofurantoin attains bactericidal effects in the lower urinary tract. Based on pharmacokinetic data, approximately 20% to 25% of nitrofurantoin is retrieved from the urine in unchanged form over 24 hours. Nitrofurantoin is soluble in urine, imparting a brown color to urine.

Renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance 60 L/minute)

Urifast CP 100mg Capsule is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.


Product And Alcohol Interaction

Consuming alcohol while taking Urifast CP 100mg Capsule may cause symptoms such as flushing, increased heart beat, nausea, thirst, chest pain and low blood pressure (Disulfiram reaction).


Breast Feeding Related Information

Urifast CP 100mg Capsule should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.


Indications

Nitrofurantoin is specifically indicated for the treatment of infections when due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, staphylococci, Citrobacter, Klebsiella and Enterobacter. Acute Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): 50 mg four times daily for seven days.
