Mechanism Of Action

Valacyclovir is converted to acyclovir, which is converted to its triphosphate form, acyclovir triphosphate (ACV-TP). ACV-TP competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase, incorporates into and terminates the growing viral DNA chain, and inactivates of the viral DNA polymerase.


Pharmacokinets

Valacyclovir is well absorbed via intestinal brush border membranes and undergoes rapid and extensive first-pass intestinal/hepatic metabolism by the enzyme valacyclovir hydrolase to acyclovir and L-valine.

Valcivir 1000 Tablet is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.


Indications

VALTREX is indicated for the treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis) in pediatric patients aged greater than or equal to 12 years. The efficacy of VALTREX initiated after the development of clinical signs of a cold sore (e.g., papule, vesicle, or ulcer) has not been established.


Interactions

Valacyclovir has no known severe interactions with other drugs. Serious interactions of valacyclovir include: bacitracin. talimogene laherparepvec.

Moderate interactions of valacyclovir include:

cimetidine.

elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF.

emtricitabine.

tenofovir DF.

Effects Of Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Valcivir 1000 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Valcivir 1000 Tablet prevents the occurrence of CMV infection and disease after organ transplant.

Valcivir 1000 Tablet reduces the chances of passing the infection to your partner, but the possibility of transmission still exists. You should practice safe sex by using condoms. However, you should not have sex if you have genital sores or blisters.
